Things happen on Tueday evening, June 6th 2010

I jogged to Chinatown with bro. First time I poke something to my ears while jogging. The culprit is a Sony mp3 player NWZ-W252. For a first timer using mp3 player while jogging, that was a good experience with the nice music playing on my ears and relaxing jog. I have to admit that I have another new gadget accompanied me - Timex Ironman.

At Pearl Central, bro wanted to look for a travel agency. We had been walking back and forth on 3rd floor and called them thrice yet still cannot find. Finally we decided to go to Smith Street's Hawker center for dinner. Again, we walked for almost 10mins to find the famous Bak Cho Mee stall and failed. Then we met a kind old man that brought us straight to the stall.

Had a good dinner before we went home.

Useful Household Tips

Ants Problem:
Keep the skin of cucumbers near the place or ant hole.

To get pure and clean ice:
Boil water first before freezing.

To make the mirror shine:
Clean with spirit

To remove chewing gum from clothes:
Keep the cloth in the freezer for an hour.

To whiten white clothes:
Soak white clothes in hot water with a slice of lemon for 10 minutes 10..

To give a shine to hair:
Add one teaspoon of vinegar to hair, then wash hair.

To get maximum juice out of lemons:
Soak lemons in hot water for one hour, and then juice them.

To avoid smell of cabbage while cooking:
Keep a piece of bread on the cabbage in the vessel while cooking.

To rid the smell of fish from your hands:
Wash your hands with a little apple vinegar.

To avoid tears while cutting onions:
Chew gum.

To boil potatoes quickly:
Skin one potato from one side only before boiling.

To boil eggs quickly:
Add salt to the water and boil.

To check freshness of fish:
Put it in a bowl of cold water. If the fish floats, its fresh.

To check freshness of eggs:
Put the egg in water. If it becomes horizontal, its fresh. If it becomes slanting, its 3-4 days old. If it becomes vertical, its 10 days old. If it floats, its stale.

To remove ink from clothes:
Put toothpaste on the ink spots generously and let it dry completely, then wash.

To skin sweet potatoes quickly:
Soak in cold water immediately after boiling..

To get rid of mice or rats:
Sprinkle black pepper in places where you find mice or rats. They will run away.

To get rid of mosquitoes at night:
Keep leaves of mint near your bed or pillows and in around the room.

Life is fragile

For the past 1 year, I have lost 10 people that I knew or close to the people I know. First my dearest aunt in BM who was my mum's youngest sister. I went back quite frequent to visit her. After fighting for 6months., she lost the battle with stomach cancer.

Next my dad. I was back at home for long holiday that time. It was weird that my bros and I felt that dad would leave us. Sadly and we miss him dearly, dad left us the very morning without waking up from his sleep.

Then another aunt lived in Selangor. She was mum's eldest bro's wife. I heard she suffered from some kind of sickness. 

A colleague's grandma. The news came not long after dad's passing.

A supplier's father due to years of sickness.

A manager's father in-law. We did not ask what happen. Most probably old age.

Sis's grandma - at the age of 90, old age too.

Two fathers of two other friends - one due to accident, the other unknown reason.

My close friend's grandpa - it was a shocked to me as I knew this fine old man for years.

Lastly my colleague's husband at very young age. 

A friend said it is shinigami season. I dont know....

Life is fragile and time is not waiting for anyone.....

NUS most expensive university in Asia :Forbes

THE National University of Singapore (NUS) has been named by Forbes.com as one of the world's most expensive universities.

It ranks alongside US institutions like George Washington University in Washington DC, Kenyon College in Ohio, Canada's Quest University, and Imperial College in the UK.

Forbes reported that full annual fees at NUS comes to about US$24,000 ($36,000) on average.

A spokesman for NUS said, however, that the university does not consider itself one of the most expensive universities in the world.

'The tuition fee actually payable by students for the majority of courses at NUS is much lower because they receive tuition grants from the Government,' the spokesman said.

The spokesman is right - the Forbes rankings do not take into account any financial aid, such as subsidies and grants, that students may receive.

According to the NUS spokesman, all Singaporean students pay subsidised fees of between $6,000 and $8,000 per annum for undergraduate courses other than medicine.

The fees for international students range from $9,000 to $12,000 per year. Only those who do not receive the Ministry of Education's tuition grant pay the full fees.

The spokesman said: 'These fees are much less than what is charged by other top universities overseas.

'Imperial College London, which is also cited by Forbes as one of top universities outside the US, charges annual tuition fees that are in the $33,000 to $43,000 range. Top US universities charge even more.'

The spokesman explained that international students who take up the tuition grant sign a deed with the Singapore Government requiring them to work in Singapore for three years upon graduation from NUS.

In addition, NUS also offers financial assistance to students in the form of tuition fee loans, bursaries and scholarships.

These are available to both Singaporean and international students.

Most Singaporean students pay heavily subsidised fees.

FedEx Delivery

I placed an order for Microsoft Office 2007 last Friday. Yesterday I received an email saying my package is on the way. My first response was "That is fast!" 

Today, I just received a call from FedEx deliveryman. He said he is at my doorstep right now. My first response was "What?" I told him that I am at work and  no one is at home. He said he knows no one is at home, that's why he called me. My second response was "Then why are you at my doorstep?" He asked if can he drops the package at my doorstep. God.. what kind of service is this. I asked him to come by my office instead since it is just 5minutes away from my house. Again, he said he covers only that area so he cannot deliver to another area. /Sweat... 

No choice I called FedEx hotline to re-arrange the delivery. I told the lady that attended to my call that I am not at home during office hour and would like to re-schedule the delivery. My final encounter (hopefully) with FedEx: The lady on the phone said she can only arrange one more time delivery tomorrow to my house. I was ....

Finally, I managed to change the delivery address. Phew! Why didn't they call in advance before the delivery? I prefer DHL service where they will make appointment one day in advance. This is what I called customer experience.

Amazing striped icebergs

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.
Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a green stripe.
Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

Antarctica Frozen Wave Pixs - Nature is amazing! The water froze the instant the wave broke through the ice. That's what it is like in Anmtarctica where it is the coldest weather in decades. Water freezes the instant it comes in contact with the air. The temperature of the water is already some degrees below freezing. Just look at how the wave froze in mid-air!!!

Ross & Christina Fegley

I was reading DogFancy and found below article very interesting. I guess Ross is the first dog that received honorary alumnus.

Ross, a 5-year-old yellow labrador retriever, stayed by Christina Fegley's side while she attended college classes, lived in dorm rooms, and stood in dinner lines.

So when Fegley, who has muscular dystrophy, graduated earlier this year from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa., the school's administrators wanted to do something special for her faithful service dog.

At the annual luncheon for graduates, Ross was named an honorary alumnus of the Class of 2008, with all the rights and privileges such as permanent library card, a bone-shaped life-time pass to athetics events and a collar with a tag that reads, Ross '08, SU Alum.
